VAT handeling

Postby xouriguer on Sat Feb 28, 2009 10:18 pm

Hi, i have now used the software long enough to have discovered a critical problem.
I am a business user and therefor the value added tax VAT on my spendings is deducted every month.
In Sweden we have 3 different levels on VAT, 25% is the normal rate, 12% is for food you bring home or takeaway, and 6% is for newspaers and culture.

It is absolutley essential to record the VAT amount somehow, is it possile that you could add a box for that?
If you put it just under the amount box it would be perfect.
I thought about using the description box but i use that for descriptions.
I need the VAT amount in a seperate field so that i can calculate it automatically in googledocs for the bookeeping.
I also considered using the different categories to record the VAT level but i´m using the categories to track my different companies.

I hope you will take this into consideration, if not, i´m not sure the software is useful for business users in coutries with different vat levels.

Best regards
Anders Jensen, Sweden.

It sounds like you need a popup you could configure that would set the VAT category for an entry, and use that to decide a percent of the entry that was tax. We will look into that. In the mean while, you might be able to save some time using the category-specific "Units" feature. If you could store all the entries which had different vat rates in different categories (i.e. FirmA (Food), FirmA(Culture), FirmB(Food)), then you could set the 'Unit' to "Kr" and the rate to the VAT rate, and your spreadsheet exports would then include a column of the original expense amount under Kr, and under the amount column, you would see the VAT amount. You could also expand the payment types list to include the different VAT types, but then you would still have to add some calculations in your spreadsheet.

Another crazy trick would be to put the VAT percentage numbers in as payment types, (like 0.12) then they will also get a spreadsheet column. They should be imported as numbers, even though the app treats them as text strings.

Hmm, i will wrap my head around that one as soon as i have the time.
A spontanious remark is that i might get rounding problems when using the percetage.
I showed the googlespreadsheet for the Januari and february expenses to the bookkeeping staff today.
They liked what they saw.
I will get back to you on this when i have thought your suggested sollution through.

Thanx!
